The Next Big Thing

I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I actually posted to this last. I’ve been busy doing and working on other things.

There was a program at the Internet Librarian this year called The Next Big Thing. It talked about the next big 3 things.

1st Moocs

I’ve been keeping my eye on the hyperlibmooc and 23 mobile things and have been learning things from them
I want to look at mentormob and have a couple of ted Talks and other youtube videos queued up to watch when I get the chance.
I also want to learn about Python and Ruby and hotkey.
I took classes on Outlook and HTML5 and CSS3
I also have been trying to learn curation with paperli symbaloo scoop.it storify reddit and flipboard
I also have been trying to learn how to use Google +, tumblr, vine, instagram, and IFTTT.

2nd Makerspaces

I love making things even though I don’t have as much time for it as i did. I think incorporating these in to a library is cool. I think adding gaming, coding, and STEM to this is a good idea. I like that they even do crafty things with fabric etc. 3d printers look cool even though I haven’t seen one in action yet.
Part of this is keeping up with tech trends. LITA’s Top Tech Trends and articles like 10 app trends for 2014 via The Guardian are great places to do this.
Google Glass is cool.
Collaborative spaces are a part of this as well. Good for local businesses.
I’ve been going around to different makerspaces in the area and collecting articles on this topic.

3rd Open Access

I haven’t had the time to look too much in to this but want to in the future. For example open access ebooks and online journals.

Public libraries show why sharing culture should never have been banned in the first place. Good blog post on ebooks and libraries in the United States.
